The third-generation owner of a Denver Japanese market reflects on the treatment of her immigrant grandfather’s past while passing the mantle to her daughter.

Isan, in Japanese Kanji means legacy in the way of heritage. Isan is a character driven documentary. The film focuses on three generations of store owners that was founded by a Japanese immigrant. The story is split up by a three act structure focusing on the different generations: The Issei (George), The Sansei(Jolie), and The Yonsei (Alyssa) and how they preserve the legacy of their family owned Japanese market in Downtown Denver. Not only does the film explore the Japanese American identity today but it also takes a look back on what it was like to be a Japanese American during and post WWII. The film asks the question how does legacy help culture preserve in an area where the community has been marginalized?
